I use this recipe to get my whites really bright. Make sure you only use this on whites though!
1/2 cup dishwasher detergent
1 cup bleach
1 gallon hot hot water
Soak for 6 hours and then launder as usual.
You will be amazed at the difference!

I never would've guessed - so does it matter if it is powder or liquid dishwasher detergent?
